DIRK Boards, a local Fairhope-based SUP & surfboard builder, is organizing the event. “Mobile Bay is a great paddling location that needs to be experienced. Conditions can be flat and then a breeze will pick up and create a downwinder…sometimes we even get wave sets because the Bay is so shallow which is really challenging,” says Dirk McCall, DIRK Boards designer. “There isn’t a better way to see it than to do it.”
The World Paddle Association (WPA) sanctioned race will have eight divisions for Men and Women 50+, 18-49 and U18 in surf style and longer displacement hulled boards. Custom woodcut awards from Bear Walker, an internationally renowned woodworker and skateboard designer. These will be given in 1-3 placing per division. Digital timing will be managed by Little Red Hen Productions.
Each racer will be given a De Luxe SURF FAIRHOPE race shirt. Custom artwork for the event was made by Underground Comix legend RL Crabb.
“The purpose of the event is to get people out boarding on the Bay, be aware of recyclable options for our environment…and yeah, maybe someone will like my boards enough to take one home and do it again,” says Dirk.
